What Level of Auto Insurance Is Required in Virginia?

Are you required to have auto insurance if you live in Virginia? Yes, just like every state, there is a mandatory state minimum for automobile insurance in Virginia.

Insurance ads are everywhere (sometimes their funny, often they are not!). But did you know that there are over 100 insurance carriers licensed in the state of Virginia!

It’s helpful to have a local Independent Agent talk over what is necessary and go over the various auto insurance options available.

State Minimums in Virginia

Virginia law says that drivers must have at least the minimum liability insurance policy. This coverage is $25,000/$50,000/$20,000 unless you are going. This read as $25,000 is the limit for what you’d have for bodily injury, $50,000 is the total limit per accident, and $20,000 is the limit for property damage.

Though this is the case for your minimum policy requirements in the state, it’s often recommended to opt for higher limits on your auto insurance policy. For example, if you are a homeowner or someone with assets to protect, the state minimum coverage is most likely not enough.

In fact, opting for higher liability limits often adds little to your policy premium. And in the event of an accident, higher limits provide more peace of mind.

Additional Types of Coverage for Automobiles

Some other kinds of insurance you might want to include the following:

  • Collision Coverage- This would take care of any expenses outside of the deductible when it comes to replacement and repair costs at the time the accident occurs.
  • Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability- This is in place for legal liability purposes for instances when another person is injured or someone else’s property is damaged.
  • Comprehensive Coverage- If there are any damages that occur that aren’t the result of an accident, such as from fire, vandalism, floods, or another type of natural disaster.
  • New Car Replacement- Available on new cars. This coverage will replace your car with a new one without depreciation. Specifics of coverage vary from carrier to carrier.

3 Safe Driving Tips for Teens

As a teenager, getting your drivers’ license is the ultimate badge of honor. Being a safe driver comes with experience but it is also something that is taught. Parents who live in Blacksburg, VA can rely on the agents of Dove Insurance Agency to provide sound advice for their young drivers. The following tips will allow parents to set good examples while they are on the road.

Eliminate Distractions

Eliminating distractions may be easier said than done. You can start by limiting the number of passengers in the vehicle to one. Encourage your teen to set the radio to the station they want prior to leaving and only change the setting when they are stopped. The same is true for using a GPS or other electronic device.

Keep Cell Phones Out of Reach

Cell phones are the ultimate distraction but they can also be useful. If your teen is using their phone as a GPS, encourage them to enable their route before they leave. Putting their phone in a secure holder will allow them to see the screen without touching the phone. Remind them not to text or place phone calls while they are on the road.

Always Leave Early

As teenagers continue to gain experience, they become better drivers. Teaching them to leave early allows them to take their time. Rushing leads to mistakes and mistakes lead to accidents. Leave early and always be cautious.

Our Family of Independent Agents help parents find answers to many of the questions they have about their auto insurance. They can also learn ways to help their teens become safer drivers.

Common Life Insurance Misconceptions

Dove Insurance Agency assists the Blacksburg, VA community, as well as the surrounding areas by offering multiple types of insurance policies. As an independent agency, we have established successful partnerships with multiple insurance providers. This allows us to help our clients regardless of their needs.

Life Insurance

Life Insurance provides a safety net for you and your family once you pass away. Term life insurance covers you over a specified period of time. The most common length of policy is between 10 and 20 years. Whole life insurance covers you throughout your entire lifespan. As you are researching different policies, please try to avoid some of the common misconceptions about life insurance that people believe are facts.

I Can Just Rely On My Coverage Provided Through My Job

While your employer may provide you with substantial coverage, it may be a mistake to simply rely on that policy. Adding extra coverage provides an additional layer of protection so that you’ll be covered regardless of any circumstances that may arise.

Single people Don’t Need Coverage

While you may be single right now, you don’t know what the future holds. It’s important to think about where you might be five years from now. Life insurance ensures that regardless of what path you take in the future, you’ll still have protection.

Stay At Home Parents Don’t Need It

This is not true. As a stay at home parent, you provide an important service that is difficult to replace. Life insurance provides a layer of protection in the event that you pass.

I Can Easily Change My Policy

Research the language in your policy carefully, as you may have to fill out paperwork in order to change a term life policy into a whole life policy, for example.

Virginia’s State Minimums for Auto Insurance

Virginia’s state laws require all drivers to carry a minimum liability insurance policy of $25,000/$50,000/$20,000, unless a higher amount is specified by Virginia DMV (For example, if you need an FR-44).

The above amounts are read as bodily injury up to twenty-five thousand dollars a person and fifty thousand dollars per accident, whereas property damage coverage must be maintained at twenty thousand dollars per accident. Uninsured motorist coverage must include twenty-five thousand dollars per person and fifty thousand dollars per accident, and twenty thousand dollars per accident.

Higher Limits Are Available

While the minimum state requirements are just that—the minimum— it’s recommended to purchase higher limits to help protect your assets.

For example, if you’re a homeowner then you should purchase no less than $100,000/$300,000/$100,000 limits. If you have higher valued assets (such as rental homes, RVs, etc..) or have higher exposures, higher limits are generally recommended, perhaps combined with an umbrella policy.

How much life insurance is enough?

Nobody likes to think about life insurance much less talk about it but it should be part of everyone’s long term financial planning. Life insurance is much more than just the death benefit. Knowing that you have enough to take care of any dependents that you may have for as long as they need it is important. At Dove Insurance Agency we have more than 50 years of insurance experience that we are happy to share with our customers.

How much life insurance you need is dependent on several things.

Do you have dependents? Dependents can be your children and spouse but there are others who may be dependent on your income. You may have parents who may need some help as they age, a sibling with a disability, or even a business partner.

How old are your dependents? How many years do you want to provide for them?  If you have young children the number of years may be as much as 20 or more considering they may want to go to college. For a dependent with a disability, it can be for their entire lifetime.

Do you have debt? Most people have some debt but it isn’t just about credit card debt or a car loan. If you have a home, likely you have a mortgage and if it is a recent purchase it can be quite large.

Have you taken care of your final arrangement? These days a funeral can cost upwards of $10,000 and even if you have no other life insurance, having enough to cover your last expenses can save your family trying to gather enough to pay.

Experts recommend that you have at least 8-10 years of your salary in life insurance. This is just a recommendation, your expectations may be much higher or lower. Only you can decide what is enough.

At Dove Insurance Agency in Christiansburg, VA we are here to help you to get the amount of life insurance that is right for you.  Give our office a call for a no-obligation quote or get an online quote instantly!

How to create a home inventory

When you hear home inventory what comes to mind? Do you picture all the rooms in your home and all the meaningful personal items that fill them? This is certainly part of it but what about the things that you don’t use or look at every day. Have you ever considered how many seasonal decorations that you have? Probably not, if you are like most people you have a combination of items that you inherited, accumulated and only look at for a few days or months every year. At Dove Insurance Agency in Blacksburg, VA we want to share our more than 50 years of experience with our current and future customers.

You can opt to do a digital inventory or you can do it the traditional way with a pad and a pen. Whichever way you choose, you need to go through your home room by room and make a record of all the things that it contains. It needs to be detailed and when it comes to electronics especially, having a sales slip, brand name, model number and serial number is not too much information to include. The more detail you include, the better chance that you will have when it comes to a claim of having your items replaced.

You need to go into your closets, attic, and basement. Open cupboards, drawers and look on shelves. Bring along your camera if you are writing the items and take pictures. Having an appraisal for any of your more expensive items is vital. Being detail-oriented is a very good thing. When you are finished place your inventory in a safe place, safe from fire or flood.

If you want to learn more about creating a home inventory or any other insurance questions, give Dove Insurance Agency on Blacksburg, VA a call. We look forward to helping you no matter what your insurance needs.

Protecting Your Family Home With Life Insurance

There is a special kind of life insurance that you buy to protect your home. This is sometimes called mortgage protection insurance. Regular home insurance provides protection against calamities that damage the house. Mortgage protection insurance pays off the mortgage if the insured person dies. It can also be extended to pay benefits while that person is alive if they become permanently disabled or get a terminal illness.

Why is life insurance important for your family home?

The median price for a home in Virginia is $285,587. These prices are going up by about 4% each year. Most families need two incomes to be able to sustain the cost of living expenses necessary to own a home. If one of those income-earners is no longer able to make their part of the needed financial contribution, then this puts the family at the risk of losing their home.

The grief of losing a loved one is bad enough. Add losing the family home on top of that grief is the worst kind of emotional torture.

Mortgage Protection Insurance

The good news is that mortgage protection insurance is available to protect your family from this horrible risk. It is usually easy to get approved for this type of life insurance. It rarely requires a medical exam, even for those with pre-existing medical conditions. Talk with your agent at Dove Insurance Agency, serving Blacksburg, VA and the surrounding area, to see what is possible for your specific circumstance.

Peace of Mind

Dedicating the proceeds of a life insurance policy to pay off a mortgage is a very wise financial planning strategy. You will know what happens if you die and that your family will still be able to live in the house that they love while no longer having to make a mortgage payment. If you extend the benefits to pay a claim while you are still alive for terminal illness and permanent disability, you will enjoy the protection as well.

Contact your agent at Dove Insurance Agency in Blacksburg, VA to get a quote for this special kind of life insurance.

3 Auto Maintenance Checks You Should Do This Year

Another year has come and gone, and your car is in desperate need of maintenance services. At Dove Insurance Agency, the quality and safety of our customers is important, which is why we are offering you the following reminders. Below are three auto maintenance services that our Blacksburg, VA clients should consider this year to keep their car performing.

Change Your Power Steering Fluid

Depending on how old your car is, the power steering fluid may have never been changed. If so, it is time to flush the old fluid and have fresh fluid flowing. This fluid is designed to keep the power steering operational and allow you to turn your vehicle left and right with no effort at all.

Have Your Tires Inspected

What kind of life do you have left on your tires? If it has been a few years since you last got tires, it is time to check their wear and tear. Have a certified technician inspect the tread level and purchase new tires if those you have are running low on tread. The smoother the tire the more dangerous they are when driving.

How’s the battery?

Every few years, it is time to get a new battery for your car. They can easily be inspected at a nearby shop or parts store for their life quality. If it is below 80%, then it is time to get a new one with a warranty.

3 Things to Remember When Driving in Cold Weather

Cold weather can wreak havoc on the roads. While snow and ice are visible signs that we can watch for when we drive, but other signs aren’t so easy to see but can be equally dangerous. At Dove Insurance Agency, the agents offer advice to their clients in Blacksburg, VA when it comes to staying safe on the roads during the winter months.

Bridges Freeze Faster Than Roadways

Because air is continuously flowing above and below bridges, their surfaces tend to freeze over faster. This can mean slick spots that will send you spinning out of control if you hit them too fast. Slow down when approaching a bridge if the temps are below freezing.

Black Ice is Invisible

Black ice can be found anywhere on the road where moisture collects. Once the water freezes, it blends in with the surface of the road and is difficult to see. Always drive carefully and be aware of the road conditions. If temps are below freezing, drive as carefully as possible.

Allow Your Car Time to Warm Up Before Leaving

Driving your car while the engine is still cold can increase wear and tear. Start your vehicle and allow it to warm up for a few minutes before leaving. This gives the oil enough time to warm up and coat all the parts before you put a load on the engine.

The agents at Dove Insurance Agency offers assistance to their clients who live in Blacksburg, VA and want to know more about safe driving and weather conditions. If you want to learn more, call our office today!
